Summer Rug Care: Protecting Wool and Silk Through a Humid July

Humidity, sand and sunlight all stress area rugs in summer. Learn how in-plant washing protects wool, silk and heirloom rugs.

Wool is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture from the air. In a humid July that means an area rug holds more water than you would expect, and any soil trapped in the foundation becomes food for odor-causing bacteria.

Why rugs get washed off-site

An area rug is not attached to the floor, so it can be dusted, submerged, rinsed and controlled-dried properly. In-plant washing removes dry particulate first — often pounds of it — then washes with pH-balanced solutions matched to the fiber and dye system.

On-site cleaning cannot rinse a rug or dry it flat under airflow, which is why heirloom and natural-fiber rugs belong in a plant.

Summer-specific rug risks

Beach sand acts like sandpaper at the base of the pile. Damp swimsuits and pet paws create localized wet spots that wick dye. Direct July sun through a window fades one side of a rug within a single season.

Rotating a rug 180 degrees every few months evens out both fading and traffic wear.

Storage and moths

If a wool rug is coming up for the summer, it must be clean and completely dry before it is rolled — moth larvae feed on soil and protein residue, not clean wool.

Roll pile-side in around a tube, wrap in breathable material rather than plastic, and store off a concrete floor.

Key takeaways

  • In-plant washing is the only way to fully rinse and flat-dry a rug
  • Dust removal before washing matters more than the wash itself
  • Never store a wool rug that is soiled or still damp
