Rug Rotation, Pads and Storage: A Late-Summer Reset

A simple end-of-summer routine keeps area rugs even, protected and moth-free through fall and winter in New Jersey homes.

Rugs age unevenly because homes are used unevenly: one end of the living room gets sun, one path gets walked, one corner sits under a chair leg for three years. A short seasonal routine fixes most of that.

Rotate and inspect

Turn each rug 180 degrees, vacuum both sides, and look at the back for foundation wear, loose ends, or pet damage. Small repairs cost far less than the damage they prevent.

Check the pad while it is up — a crumbling foam pad can adhere to the floor finish and cause more damage than it prevents.

Clean before you store

Any rug going into storage must be professionally cleaned and fully dry first. Moths and carpet beetles are attracted to soil, food residue and protein, not to clean wool.

Roll pile-in around a tube, wrap in a breathable material such as Tyvek or cotton sheeting, and never store directly on concrete.

Set the fall schedule

High-traffic wool rugs generally need professional washing every 12-18 months; entry and kitchen rugs more often; low-traffic bedroom rugs every two to three years.

Pickup and delivery makes this simple — the rug leaves clean and comes back ready for the season.

Key takeaways

  • Rotate rugs 180 degrees seasonally to even out wear and fading
  • Only clean, dry rugs should be rolled and stored
  • Wrap in breathable material and keep off concrete
