A wet basement carpet and the pad underneath

Category 3 is grossly contaminated, including sewage and long standing water, and porous material such as carpet pad and saturated drywall is removed rather than dried. What water does behind a wall

Water travels sideways and upward through porous material. A spill on a first floor wicks into the base of drywall, climbs the paper face, and runs along the bottom plate into the next room while the visible carpet looks nearly dry. That is why readings are taken up the wall at marked points rather than at the floor alone, and why baseboards are pulled where the meter says the cavity is wet.

A finished basement hides the same movement. Insulation behind studs stays wet long after the room feels normal, and a wall cavity with no air movement can hold water for weeks. Drilled holes at the bottom plate or a removed section of the lower wall let air reach the cavity, and the decision to open a wall is made on readings, not on appearance.

Drying, and the meter that ends it

Structural drying is sized to the wet material. Air movers are placed to move air across wet surfaces and dehumidifiers pull the released water out of the room, and the equipment count comes from the amount and type of material holding water rather than from the size of the room on a floor plan.

Fixed monitoring points are marked on the first visit and read on every visit afterward. Drying stops when those readings come back to normal, which is a meter reading rather than a fixed number of days. Comparison readings are taken on an unaffected part of the same material, so the target is what the building is like when dry, not a number borrowed from somewhere else.

Mold work and the written result

Mold is a water problem that was left alone long enough to grow.
