Ten inches of rain fell across New Jersey that day and the west branch of the Rahway River, which runs straight through the middle of the town center, went over into the shops and the houses around it.

A supply line that failed inside a Short Hills house and the west branch coming into a Main Street shop are two different claims to the same insurer.

Standard policies also carry a duty to mitigate, which means reasonable steps to prevent further damage are expected once the loss is known. Waiting for an adjuster before anything is extracted can be read afterwards as neglect.
